bratsera1A short walk from the small ferry port of magical Hydra, the Bratsera is an old sponge factory turned into the most enchanting island hotel, built around its own courtyard. The courtyard itself is drenched in greenery and boasts a sizeable swimming pool, with tables scattered around it and the shaded gardens.

bratseraThe “lobby” is really a rambling reception area with its own exhibition space, photo albums, scrapbooks, old sponges and general antique paraphernalia that reflects the history of the island.

bratsera2The rooms are rustic style, with lime-washed walls, wood, stone or old terracotta tiles, flowing white gauze curtains and original wooden doors and handles.

Don’t let the rustic style fool you into believing contemporary comfort may be in some way compromised, though.

From high speed internet, to minibars stocked with complimentary mineral water, to air conditioning units, the Bratsera has not forgotten a thing when it comes to making its visitors want for nothing.

The bathrooms are as well-equipped as at any 5 star hotel – olive oil products, sewing kits, even nail files and special beach towels in case you fancy a dip in the sea. And what a sea it is!…

Hydra has quite possibly the most breath taking coastline and a magnificent sunset. We were fortunate enough to be on the island for a mid-summer concert of traditional Greek music and dancing port-side.

Returning to the Bratsera quite late at night, we saw other guests still enjoying the dream-like gardens over a last drink.

Words cannot quite do justice to this place, so we hope pictures will. This summer, if you are still considering your holiday options, don’t: if you are lucky enough to secure a room at the Bratsera, you’d have one of the most perfect summers of your life. Guaranteed.
