Tequila, the smooth spirit made from the agave plant is a firm favourite of The Tastemaker’s. We recently had the opportunity to sample Don Julio Blanco, one of the best tequilas currently available.

Don Julio, the eponymous brand, was informally established in 1985 on the 60th birthday of its founder Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada, who began distilling tequila in his own distillery at the age of 17. He spent 40 years improving his product at La Primavera in Jalisco, Mexico. The immense popularity of the tequila in Guadalajara and neighbouring cities led to the launch of the tequila brand in 1987.

Made from 100% pure blue Weber agave plants from the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, the tequila undergoes a lengthy process. The agave plants are grown for between seven to ten years before being harvested.

Aged in American white-oak barrels, the Don Julio tequila is notable for soft, fresh and light citrusy nose. The initial taste is true to the nose – but a little sweeter. The finish, however, is the best part of this sublime tequila. With a touch of smoke and lingering agave, the Don Julio Blanco gives a clean bite on the finish.

From an initial playful nose to a swig of tequila with gravitas, the Don Julio Blanco is a smooth, sweet ride.

As one reviewer wrote: “I was a vodka drinker till now. No hangover either. It is amazing.”

What more can we say?
