If you’re in search for gourmet tapas, then head to Restaurante La Candela in Cadiz.

La-candela-tapas-bar-cadiz-int3The charming town of Cadiz has long been a favourite of ours, with its cobbled streets lined with quirky eateries and bars. The nightlife is authentic, zany and fun – much like La Candela.

La Candela is twist on traditional tapas. The chef is ingenious with ingredients, and manages to conjure up sublime tastes that exceed any expectations we might have had.

We had ordered several tapas, as per tradition, but La Candela brought them out one by one. Obviously, they are aware of the exquisite taste of each dish and want each diner to fully indulge and engage with any given dish, before proceeding to the next.

Our first dish was the Foie Gras with goats cheese. An incredible melange, the combination of soft foie gras, tart goats cheese and a drizzle of honey on the top made this an incredibly moreish dish that was finished with zeal.

This was followed by a plentiful goats cheese salad. Striking a balance of leafy greens and tasteful adornments (the goats cheese and a sprinkling of nuts), it was a soft initation into the delights that would follow.

We also had a green salad with breaded sardines, parmesan cheese, hazelnuts and dried tomato vinaigrette – a delicious combination of unqiue tasting ingredients.

Next up was the cod with black pudding. The cod itself needed no adornment: lightly drizzled in olive oil and with salt to taste, it was an exceptionally well-prepared fish. This was accompanied with dollops of black pudding, hummous and aubergine creating a luscious, not-so-heavy taste of heaven on the tongue.

The roasted octopus was the next contender. The tender octopus was drenched in a melange of olive oil, squid ink and pesto – an ambrosial marriage of ingredients that is indeed fit for the Gods.

This is without a doubt Michelin star quality food at a very affordable price. It was our best meal when visiting Spain and we look forward to re-visiting it.
