Set against an imposing backdrop – that is, 170 hectares of land, to be exact – is the Monte do Zambujeiro estate, framed by an amber sun.
Owner Monica McGill hails from a family of landowners. What was once her grandmother’s house has been lovingly turned into what is one of the finest examples of agritourism today. Monica, a long-time resident of Zambujeiro, is key to all the hidden gems in the surrounding area and your encyclopedia while there. For example, the exquisite Porto Das Barcas restaurant that hugs the coast in Vila Nova de Milfontes is just one of the recommendations she might make.
The addition of several outbuildings including the Casa do Rio, where we stayed, has created a small, sustainable retreat in the heart of Alentejo.
Our casita was a perfect blend of modern and rustic. Any urban dweller would feel at home with the technology gadgets inside: an ipod dock, HD TV, state-of-the art facilities (think kitchen appliances and coffee machine) and air conditioning. And in case you forget you are in the middle of a nature reserve, the immense landscape in front of you can be enjoyed from the comfort of your bed.
The main house is where the action takes place. Breakfast (and other meals) is enjoyed on the small terrace with a sweeping view over the lake. The ladies at Monte do Zambujeiro are incredibly kind and diligent and will work to satisfy any request – and beyond.
Right below are a series of hammocks where you can while away your time watching the sun set or just plain enjoying the impressive nature that abounds around you. There is also a pool for those wishing to relax in the middle of a paradisiacal setting.
The modern comforts here coupled with an incomporable quality and way of life make this the ultimate indulgent retreat.
And, if you’re adventurous enough, the Rota Vicentina totalling some 400 km of hiking routes is at your fingertips. Think Fishermen’s Trails, walking along some of the world’s most pristine, untainted beaches…..it’s all there, ready to be explored.
