A 20 minute drive (or walk) from the medina are two riads in the the Sans Souci collection: Riad des Cigognes and Riad Kaiss.

Cigognes

Tastefully restored, retaining the original features with some contemporary interpretation, this is a very, very pretty and immaculate riad. We loved the roof terrace with its shaded alcoves and comfortable sofas; the muted tadelakt on the walls of our room; the intricate wooden shutters and floor to ceiling fireplace.

The various reception areas (small salons, library and restaurant) are decorated in an African theme with original photographs and wooden sculptures evoking colonial chic.

Breakfast is a la carte and the shakshuka interpretation quite delicious, but unlike at Karmela, it is charged separately.

A superior quality riad, perfectly renovated and somewhat tucked away from the eternal bustle of the city.

Kaiss

This is an older house that makes a virtue of the odd dilapidated wall, drawing the eye to the beautifully painted and inlaid wooden ceilings throughout.

This riad has a hammam and a plunge pool and a fabulous statement piece in the garden: a carved wooden swing that is not use but a delight to look at.

The manageress is incredibly friendly, efficient and perfectly multi-lingual. Rooms are small but again, full of original and well-preserved features of exquisite craftsmanship. Do not expect a 5 star bathroom at Kaiss – this is not the point of the riad. Its beauty is in the preservation of the Morocca heritage and its location – at the doorstep of the laid-back local market and close to Kosybar.
