In the heart of the City, and a Grade II-listed building (formerly the Bank of New Zealand), The Trading House is, for those in the know, one of the liveliest venues on any given night.
With an eclectic menu, a quirky crowd and live music every night, it’s hard to go wrong here.

My companion and I entered The Trading House unknowing of its theatricality. Immediately upon entering, one is catapulted into a scene of liveliness, tremendous energy and overwhelming fun. The live singer, playing popular songs such as ‘The Boxer’ was definitely an aide to the gaiety, if one was needed.

So, 10/10 for ambiance and setting.

For our gourmet odyssey, we started off with a liquid twist: bellinis. A strawberry and anise bellini and a peach melba bellini. Refreshing, moderately sweet and oh-so-yummy, they were the perfect induction to the meal.

Our starters consisited of a basket of chicken wings with BBQ sauce and a wonderful homemade houmous board, with crudites galore. Simple and effective: our appetite was wheted for the next course.

As true Tastemakers, we decided to wash our solids down with a bottle of Jeio rose, a sparkling Italian wine with the perfect, not-too sweet, subtle taste of strawberries.

Up next were the chicken burger, prawn hanging kebab and flattened rump steak. The chicken burger was an easy-going, light dish for those with a smaller appetite. The prawn hanging kebab was unusual in display and, when dismantled into the rice below, a gastronomic treat, oozing sweet chilli and garlic butter. The steak, however, was the piece de resistance. Medium-rare, it was tantalisingly, melt-in-your mouth delicious. A 10/10 for us, with the mashed potato containing hints of cinnamon and nutmeg.

To finish the meal off, we indulged in a traditional trifle sunday and sticky toffee pudding. These do not disappoint. The sticky toffee pudding hits the spot – not overwhelming sweet but indulgently tasty, it was just-so. The trifle, a little heavy on the cream side, was nevertheless a delicious ending to a great meal.

Our verdict? If you’re looking for a night out, with an all-round good meal, The Trading House is definitely it. It is one of those restaurants(-cum-bar) that are a staple and never fail to disappoint.
