On an unassuming side street bang in the middle of a heaving Soho, the newly opened Belgo restaurant is one of the few Belgian restaurants to exist in London.

The interior of the restaurant itself is fabulous: it has a quirky decor, with movie posters and photographs lining the brick wall giving it an authentic vibe, as if transporting you to a side brasserie in Belgium. We were astonished that every single table in the restaurant was occupied – a testimony to its popularity and success. And, with such a friendly service in place, the show certainly seems to have high standards.

Perusing the menu will reveal an impressive list of myriad beer options and a respectable wine list. We opted for a bottle of Sancerre Blanc domaine de la Chezatte, a young (2014) and fruity option to wash down the seafood mains.

We started with the giant dill pickles. 10/10 for both taste and amsuement factor! These really were the piece de resistance and perfect induction to the night.

Our main courses were the moules traditionelle with garlic, celery and white wine and a whole lobter with garlic butter, pea shoots, Belgo homemade coleslaw and mixed salad. The mussels were succulent and the sauce a subtle and tasty dressing – just so. The lobster, together with the garlic butter was simply yummy. It’s often difficult to dress lobster, however, Belgo Soho managed to create an indulgent work of art. The homemade coleslaw, too, was totally moreish.

After our seafood gastronomic odyssey, we progressed onto dessert. Everyone knows of the famed Belgian crepes and waffles and so, it was with a sense of excitement we proceeded to ‘Build our own dessert’. We chose the waffle with dark chocolate sauce and a scoop of honey and ginger, and salted caramel to boot. This finale, however, came with mixed reviews. The waffle itself was cold (although advertised as prepared freshly), thus rather than enhancing the companion flavours, acted as a bland base. The ice cream, however, is worth going in for alone. The honey and ginger was tantalisingly delicious, as was the salted caramel – enough to satisy the fussiest of epicureans.belgo-3-1024x683
