Just as the name suggests, the hotel is indeed the Grande Dame of the city of Athens. Strategically positioned next to the House of Greek Parliament and overlooking Syntagma Square, in summer, this is an oasis of cool marble and greenery, classic tapestries, contemporary and traditional furniture and an outstanding spa complex.

grandebretagne  We loved the opulence of the place, and the discreet attentiveness. We particularly appreciated the late ending breakfast on the terrace with its breath-taking views across to the Acropolis and beyond.

The lobby restaurant is one of the most attractive we’ve seen and it has to be said that Greek hospitality staff are among the best in the world. Unfailingly obliging and always smiling, they are also superbly trained at the Grande Bretagne.hotel-grande-bretagne-hotel-athens-athens-player

In common with their other Mediterranean neighbours, Greeks dine late and the city is at its most lively after midnight during the summer months. The heat lets up, bars and cafes in small alleyways light up and ordering a glass of Ouzo, a salad or a selection of the ever-delicious Levantine mezedhes, is one of the greatest simple pleasures in life.
