The Rib Room Restaurant at Carlton Tower Hotel has been a landmark eatery for decades.

It was recently re-designed to include a very nice outside terrace, shielded from the traffic by extensive greenery.

B Beyond and The Taste Maker were guests at the launch of the Rib Room’s very own Wine Club, hosted by master sommelier Gearoid Devaney.

Becoming a member of the Wine Club affords some very interesting privileges in addition to regular tastings – if you want to treat your guests to a special bottle of wine from your own cellar, you won’t be charged corkage and if you have 3 guests or more, you would dine for free.

The theme of the inaugural wine tasting was The Other Side of Chardonnay.

Gearoid provided running commentary on the selected wines and encouraged guests to express an opinion. Extensive notes on each producer were supplied.

The wines we tasted were as follows:

Mâcon-Loché, Domaine Clos des Rocs 2010, a light Chardonnay with a hint of green apples and moderate acidiy.

Foxglove, Varner Wines, Santa Cruz, California, 2009, a well-rounded wine with rich sesame and nougat scent and ripe fruit flavour.

Branko Chardonnay, Collio Lombardy, 2010 smoky/flinty scent, complex and sophisticated on the palate.

Chablis Premier Cru, Côte de Lechet, Domaine Bernard Defaix, 2009, intense colour, scent of iodine and liquorice, a very traditional Chablis

Pulenta Estate, Chardonnay VIII, 2010, Argentina, a robust meaty wine, with some heat to it (14% alcohol)

McHenry Hohnen, Calgardup Brook Chardonnay, 2010, Australia, burnt scent, distinctive fresh finish on the palate.

My personal favourite was the Branco, closely followed by the Foxglove.
