Walking into the MeatCo. will reveal to you in an instant its insane popularity. Locals, holiday-makers, visitors to Westfields, and those who make the journey especially to visit the MeatCo., show the brands’ strong following. Needless to say, a relaxed, yet upbeat vibe permeates the atmosphere; an exciting initiation into a gastronomical odyssey.

The main seating area is upstairs and, after having tried one of the experimental and quirky cocktails at the bar, this is where you will be taken. We loved the contemporary design, intermingled with African elements, such as the tusk-like lamps ad ubiquitous leather upholstered seats.

The gourmet safari begins with our drinks and a small selection of beef jerky and oh-so-yummy olives. A delicious Bloody Mary makes its way to our table, with a hint of clamato lingering on the palate. We chose the Footprint Merlot Pinotage, African Wines, 2012, to accompany the meal – a light yet robust Merlot, perfect to wash down a carnivorous feast.

Our entrees consisted of a double helping of bone marrow. A large bone slab is presented, with diners needing to dig in to the good part (the marrow), which is lightly seasoned with a few herbs. Fatty and salty, the dish is totally irresistible and, we like to think, highly nutritious!

Our mains are up next: the kangaroo, boerewers, and 300g New Yorker with a lobster combo. Top marks for presentation here!

The kangaroo medallions, in a subtly sweet sauce, were an interesting and delicious article. The meat is soft although it was hard to distinguish the flavour of the kangaroo, drenched in its sauce. However, it was a scrumptious dish, accompanied by a delicious creamed spinach.

The boerewers consisted of a large sausage spiraling on top of a mountain of mashed polenta (traditional South African fare). The sausage, with a mixture of spices, was delicious and the polenta, unique and unusual, a suitable, plain aide to the numerous spices.

The New Yorker with lobster was truly a sight to behold, almost overflowing on its plate. The New Yorker, in all its juicy, flavoursome glory, was topped off with a lobster, slightly seasoned. As if this wasn’t enough, a side of chips (with some fantastically spicy English mustard!) is offered too.
