090504094141_saucLocated in the trendy Hotel Ohla in Barcelona’s Barri Gotic, Saüc, which takes its name from the elderberry plant, is a fine dining establishment where chef Xavi Franco serves up creative culinary treats. The restaurant’s décor is chic and modern: crisply clothed tables are geometrically spaced along a long woodfloored room with a wall of large glass windows looking over the plush lobby.

Saüc is a stylish spot for everyone from businessmen to groups of friends.

restaurant-sauc-s-c-pWe had the Tasting Menu, a perfect opportunity to sample the full range of Franco’s inventive flare (although at €108 per head with 14 courses it is definitely something for a special occasion). The pompadour of crab and foam of tupinamb was a standout starter. Served in a martini glass the dish was a welcome reminder of Barcelona’s affiliation with great seafood. Scallops were given an exciting twist: marinated in mackerel tartar and served with grilled vegetables and couscous (a dish also served a la carte). The duck cannellonies
were truly special – the thin light exterior stuffed with succulent meat was a rich and hearty edition to an otherwise seafood dominated menu.

245052_13030419320010732868_STDOur choice of two desserts were equally delicious: the warm cherry soufflé with vanilla ice cream was reminiscent of grandma’s baking while the strawberry mocha, yoghurt and ginger and green tea ice cream reflected the contemporary experimentalist theme of the menu.

Starters on the a la carte menu are around €20-€29, mains are between €28 and €37 and desserts are all priced at €11.50. For the standard of the food served Sauc is priced incredibly reasonably – the same restaurant in London would give  the credit card more of a workout!
