If you have a penchant for sumptuous interiors, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything that beats the Royal Olympic.

The marble, wood and gilt-panelled lobby is a presage of what you might expect of your room or suite. The inner court, immediately visible from every side of the lobby, houses the brilliant pool area, clearly highly popular with the guests. Hotel_Swimming_Pool_6301

Our room elicited a collective gasp, not so much because of its interior to which we will come back momentarily, but for its unparalleled view. An entire glass wall framed perfectly the Temple of Zeus in its full glory. A view like that does not require any adornment – it is an art work in itself.

The rooms of the Royal Olympic are indeed Olympian both in size and unapologetic luxury.Luxury_Hotel_Accommodation_9191

Traditionally furnished in heavy damasks, rugs, wood panelled wardrobes and coloured marble, they are, in fact, palatial. A nod to technology are the electronically operated lights and curtains, with buttons by each bed side.

The bathrooms deserve a separate paragraph here: marble mosaic floors, Olympian (again) size bath tub, separate shower area, gilded taps – all of it polished to absolute perfection – these are designed to make you feel like Croesus himself.

Breakfast finishes at 10 promptly, so if you don’t want to miss it, head for a dedicated – and very sumptuous looking – lift that takes you to a terrace on the 7th floor. Even if you don’t eat breakfast, do visit the terrace as it offers another magnificent view of the Parthenon that is matchless.

Privately owned and managed, the hotel reflects the owner’s taste in art, with traditional oils hanging in hallways and depicting what one would imagine are Greek seascapes.
